Monsters

When you’re young
monsters are simple
they’re large
yelly things
hiding under your bed
or they could be
small creatures with pointed teeth
nesting in your closet
either way
you can notice
their monster features
notice they are dangerous
they are terrifying
as we grow older
we realize monsters
are much more complex
they look human
and they take hold within anyone
boozed up nights numbing the pain
lighters to lift them
as the smoke invades their lungs
falling asleep with a lit cigarette
and taking out an entire complex
with sleeping children
monsters they’re everywhere
lacking sleep
functioning on liquid coated energy
raiding medicine cabinets
to stop a migraine
yelling as the plastic cup tips
and the liquids stain the carpet
because monsters are made
when self love evaporates
and quick fixes
fill the liquid spaces.
