The boards up on the windows.

The sirens stopped
and the silence churned
a deeper fear within her.
It was quiet.
The boards up on the windows
and she thought
do I take them down,
is it worth the risk to know the truth?

Arms gripped upon her waist,
“it’s best to wait,” he said.
“In here it is us,
out there is another boarded up home
inside more sheltered
and they’re safe there.
When it’s time we will remove the boards
and see their eyes lock ours
through the windows
and we will know
there is hope.
For we will build.
And lets hope who is left
is worth building with.
Otherwise our bodies will give away
and fertilize the dirt
and the food that grows
will feed more hate.
Lets hope that who is left
is worth rebuilding with
or else this was for nothing. “
